Day 29; Goodbye Lanta Animal Welfare!

Today was my last official day at Lanta Animal Welfare, I didn't sleep much, partly due to the excitement of getting back on the road, (or ocean), but mostly due to the cat who was wriggling around at the bottom of my bed all night!

I was up at 8ish and finished packing my bag, I had clothes that were still wet from the storm last night so hung them out and hoped they'd be dry before I had to put them in my backpack. My trainers were beyond soaked and I decided to leave them behind. I went into the centre to get breakfast, Juliane and I were supposed to be working but instead were packing up and cleaning the room, a job we abandoned yesterday in faver of lunch on the beach.  I felt bad that I wasn't helping with the animals but the others had everything under control and said they didn't mind, although I'm sure they did a little bit! ...people should just say what they think.

My last walk with Nazir and Spot the Dog!
Juliane left a 11.30, we said our goodbyes and promised to meet up at some point later in life... An hour later it was almost time for me to leave, the clothes I had hung out earlier had dried, I took them off the washing line ready to put in my bag, and then, in true Kat Casey fashion, dropped them in the cats water bowl, wonderful!

My taxi arrived, I said goodbye to everyone and promised to seek them all out if I ever find myself in their home countries. Life as a backpacker is full of goodbyes, I kind of like it this way, make friends, have fun, and move on with fond memories... It's a nice way to live.

A fuller than full taxi took me to the pier at Saladan where I boarded the boat to Railay Beach. Luckily, this boat ride was much less eventful than my last! After a mid-ocean switch into a longtail boat I finally arrived in Railey Beach about 3pm... It's very beautiful here, I'm back in paradise.

I plan to spend a few days on the beach here before heading back to Bangkok to start the long journey back home. This month has been an interesting and eye opening one, I think that I've learnt a lot about both people and animals. I'm not sure that I'll ever return to Koh Lanta but it is definitely a place that I will never forget.

Thank You for having me, Koh Lanta... It has been a pleasure.

  1. I love dogs and appreciate your good work on Ko Lanta, but I also want to mention the problem of ragged and wild dogs within Thailand. I was bitten by a rabid dog in Bangkok and needed to get all the necessary shots when back in San Francisco. Expensive, not painful, but Thailand needs to take serious measures about homeless dogs, threatening almost everyone.
